Island Surfboards is Monty Smith, who has been in the surfing industry in Puerto Rico since 1970. He started building boards and selling surf t-shirts in June of 1970 in the "Puerto Rico Island Surf Shop" on Wilson Ave. in Condado, then moved to Island Surf Shop & Island Water Sports in Isla Verde.
He built the first skate ramp and sponsored one of the first skateboarding teams in Puerto Rico.
Soon after, he expanded the surfboard factory to Rincon, the testing grounds for all the shapes of the 70's and 80's. Island Surfboards produced over 1800 surfboards during this time. Monty was selling Island surfboards and tees all over Puerto Rico and exporting to Florida, New Jersey and New York. "I am proud that I was part of the growing and maturing of the surfing industry in Puerto Rico", says Monty.
Monty is now in the process of shaping and designing surfboards from a modern, high tech surfboard factory and is offering shapes from epoxy long Boards to short four fin fishes and of course everything in between.
